Resilience and Posttraumatic Growth

Some individuals suffer trauma and develop detrimental emotional repercussions, such as PTSD. Others, however, show emotional growth when confronted by a distressing event. Our presentation examines theory and research on posttraumatic growth, and provided attendees with assessment methodology and interventions to enhance resilience to trauma.

The objectives of the presentation:

  • To distinguish traditional models of trauma outcome from a focus on strength and growth in the aftermath of traumas.
  • To understand the connections between posttraumatic growth and concepts such as resilience, hardiness, sense of coherence, and concepts in addiction.
  • To learn techniques for assessing posttraumatic growth.
  • To develop an understanding of a model that describes the process of growth after trauma, including elements of cognitive, emotional, and social functioning.
  • To learn clinical approaches to facilitating posttraumatic growth in individual group and family therapy using an integrative therapy framework.
  • To recognize that in clinical work with trauma survivors there is the danger of traumatization, as well as opportunities for growth for the clinician
